- holy place
- Part of Solomon's Temple, also called the ‘nave’ (1 Kgs. 7:50, NRSV) and adjacent to the innermost chamber called the ‘Holy of Holies’ or ‘inner sanctuary’ (NRSV, REB). In the holy place were an altar for incense, ten golden lampstands, and a table for the bread of the Presence (1 Kgs. 7:48). The arrangement was reproduced in the second Temple (520–515 BCE) and on a magnificent scale in that of Herod (sometimes called the third Temple).
